Headaches & Migraines
What do dehydration, TMJ irritation, and stress all have in common? By
the title, you probably can guess. All of these physiological factors
cause tension headaches.
There are more types of headaches than just tension-related, such as migraine,
disease-related, or cluster headaches. However, according to the American
Chiropractic Association (ACA), only five percent of headaches result
from an underlying disease. Ninety-five percent of headaches can be taken
at face value, and most of these are caused by tension.
The solution seems simple—reduce tension in your daily life, right?
Sure. But we can probably all attest to the reality that this is much
easier said than done.
Here are some causes of tension headaches:
- Grinding of the teeth
- Keeping the head in one position for a long period of time, such as when
on the computer, sewing, reading, watching TV, etc.
- Sleeping or laying in positions that twist the neck
You can probably see the solutions here. Drink more water, reduce stress,
don't grind your teeth. We can talk more about these lifestyle choices
in a moment. But what you need to know is that home remedies are not the
only solution and in fact, may not even be the most effective. Chiropractors
can help relieve tension headaches almost instantly.
According to the ACA, a North Carolina-based study showed that after receiving
spinal manipulation treatment by a chiropractor, patients with headaches
caused by tension in the neck felt relief almost immediately.
The spinal manipulation solution works because when tension is in the neck,
it is usually due to a misalignment of the vertebra. When vertebrae get
out of line, they pull surrounding muscles with them, and muscle stiffness
and nerve pain result.
What chiropractors offer and medications cannot is the placement of these
vertebrae into their original locations. This frees up the attached muscles
and stops nerves from sending pain signals.
What patients need to understand is that the spine is an interesting bone
structure. When your hips swivel, there are muscles that pull it back
into place. The spine has no muscle to correct its position. This is why
patients need an external force to put the bones back into place.
The next time you feel a tension headache coming on, do a few things:
- Perform low-impact exercises
- Drink at least eight glasses of water per day
- Do not touch the top teeth to the bottom teeth except when chewing
- Take stretch breaks every 30 minutes when you perform a task that has you
in one position
But do one more thing: make an appointment with your local chiropractor.
His touch to your neck bones may not only solve your tension problem immediately,
but it will most likely prevent many more headaches in your future, making
your life more pleasant.
