• Text Neck

Those darn kids, always texting on their cellular mobile telephone whatchamacallits!

Ok, so here at True Wellness, we aren’t that old and grumpy, however we do get tired of seeing kids, teenagers, and adults spending so much time staring at their phones/computers/tablets. Is it because we hate technology and miss the days of rotary phones and walk-mans? No! It’s because we see countless people with what we call “text neck!”

Hint: this is not good for your spine

“Text-neck” is becoming more and more common in our society, but aside from making you look like the handle of an umbrella, text-neck will lead to many health problems, including (but not limited to) decreased blood and air supply to your brain! (Hint: this is not good for your brain) So are we doomed to be a nation of vulture-necked people? Absolutely not. Looking down at your cell phone once or for an extended period of time does not mean you will forever have bad posture. A simple analogy is the rock analogy. If you throw one rock into your car every day, after 10 years you have a car full of rocks. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t take the rocks out, it just simply means that the longer you throw rocks in, the more rocks there are to take out. The same goes for our spine and health. The longer we contribute to poor spinal health, the longer it takes to correct it, but almost all simple issues (like text neck!) are correctable in our clinic!

  • Soreness vs. Pain

People everyday complain about being in pain. “My low back hurts”, “my neck hurts”, “my shoulders feel so tight”. These are the complaints we hear everyday from so many people. But, when it comes to knowing whether its actually pain or just soreness can be unclear to many.

Most people confuse soreness for pain because it is a constant, dull, achy feeling that they tend not to like or enjoy very much. Some may think this feeling is painful because they may not be use to it, they may have a low or sensitive pain tolerance, or they associate soreness only with working out or being physically active. Since the soreness is painful to them they associate it with being a pain instead of being sore.

Soreness is caused by two ways; one way is from small, controlled damage to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. When we exercise or get a massage the muscles are being damaged a little from the impact of the exercise and the breaking up of tight muscles from the massage. This small temporary damage of the muscles is what leads to the dull, achy feeling of being sore. The second way soreness is caused is by the build up of lactic acid in the muscles that are being worked when exercising or when tight muscles are broken up in a massage. When exercising lactic acid builds up when the circulatory system does not dispose of the excess lactic acid quick enough leaving the acid in the muscles. Lactic acid is also released into the circulatory system during a massage, because the massage therapist is breaking up the tight muscles that contain the lactic acid build up. This is why it is very important to hydrate the body with plenty of water to flush out the lactic acid in our bodies after a massage as well as after exercise. Also, to prevent from having a lot of soreness after exercise it is important to properly cool down after a workout, stretch, and hydrate.

On the other hand pain is an issue that is caused by an impact, overuse of a particular part of the body over time, or from performing an exercise or daily activities in an incorrect position. When we are in pain its the way our body communicates to us that something is wrong and we need to take care of it right away. Pain is associated with more of a sharp or jabbing sensation that is constantly there or when we are in a particular body position. If you experience any kind of pain it is very important to get it taken care of or checked as soon as possible so as to not lead to something more serious. To prevent pain we must become more aware of our bodies and the way we do activities correctly or incorrectly. Our bodies are the only ones we have so it is important to take good care of where we live.

  • Boost Your Immune System this Winter…Naturally!

With the cold season finally here, it is more important than ever to make sure we are all taking care of our bodies to keep them healthy and strong to fight off the various seasonal illness going around. Now, while it’s easy or convenient to just go get a shot, shots are rarely the answer. Why pump a syringe full of chemicals into your body when you can boost your immune system naturally?

Chiropractic care along with a good diet and regular exercise is a great, natural way to keep your health up over the long winter months. Now, we’ve all heard that before, “diet and exercise, diet and exercise,” but that’s only because it’s true!! Eating heavily processed foods, being inactive, and having subluxations will all lead to more stress on your body. The more stress that is on your muscles and nerves, the more time your body needs to rest to recover and process the chemicals from the food and the chemicals released by your body due to stress. Have you ever exercised well for a period of time, then noticed how tired you felt after you stopped a regular program of exercise? It’s because being active is what the body is designed for, and it enables it to be stronger and work better.

So remember, if you want your body to be able to fight off illness NATURALLY, simply eat real foods, be more active, and see your Chiropractor to ensure your do not have subluxations that will impede your body’s ability to function properly!

  • Coughing, Sniffles, and Fever… OH MY!!!

Its that time of the year again when people start to feel under the weather and worry about catching the new virus that is going around. Its Flu Season!! Everyone is running to their doctor or to the nearest drug store to get their flu vaccination. Every other commercial or ad on the billboards tells us to hurry and get there discounted or even FREE flu vaccine. The past few years I was right there in the midst of all the panic rushing to get my flu vaccine so I didn’t catch that horrid flu.

But is the flu vaccine really helpful? How effective is this so called vaccine that is the “prevention” for the flu? Is getting the flu worse than the possible side effects that comes from the flu vaccine? All these questions come to my mind now that I have learned more about the flu vaccine from its effectiveness to its horrible side effects.

According to the CDC the flu vaccine used to be 70-90% effective, but the CDC has recently released that the vaccine is no decreased to being only 50-70% effective to preventing the flu. That is a great decrease in effectiveness on a prevention that the media has pushed for its importance and the key to keeping the flu away. On top of the effectiveness making a significant decrease. Have you asked yourself what is in this vaccine that we are all so easily getting injected into our body.

According to the CDC the ingredients in the flu vaccine are as follows:

    Type of Ingredient Examples Purpose
Preservatives Thimerosal (only in multi-dose vials of flu vaccine) To prevent contamination
Adjuvants Aluminum salts To help stimulate the body’s response to the antigens
Stabilizers Sugars, gelatin To keep the vaccine potent during transportation and storage
Residual cell culture materials Egg protein To grow enough of the virus or bacteria to make the vaccine
Residual inactivating ingredients Formaldehyde To kill viruses or inactivate toxins during the manufacturing process
Residual antibiotics Penicillin, sulfa drugs To prevent contamination by bacteria during the vaccine manufacturing process

These ingredients are surprisingly more dangerous to our bodies over time than catching the flu virus. According to Dr. Hugh Fundenberg getting a flu vaccine 5 consecutive times increases a persons chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease 10 times more likely than someone who hasn’t got vaccinated. The Thimerosal contains mercury that causes brain injury and autoimmune injury. The aluminum is associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and seizures, and Formaldehyde is a hazardous waste that causes cancer.

I’m not telling you to not get the flu vaccine. But, just stating that it is important to investigate the vaccines we get and understand that not all of them are as effective as we have been told. As well we don’t know what are in these vaccines and we should know what is going in our bodies. Our bodies are important we only get one and its where we live. How important is where you live to you???

  • Healthcare vs. Sick-care

    Time for a drastic illustration:

If you have a knife stuck in your hand, is it more effective to take out the knife and then fix the wound, or to leave the knife in and treat the pain? I hope you chose the first answer! Unfortunately, in our society we, as well as medical providers, often choose to metaphorically leave the knife in and treat the symptoms instead of treating the problem.

So why do we stay sick? Why does back pain keep coming back when commercials for “all-day pain relief” medications promise relief? Why do we keep getting sick after taking medications? It’s because we are choosing to “leave the knife in.” If you have back pain, don’t cover up the pain with a medication, find out what the problem is and fix the problem, don’t just treat the symptom! So many times it really is that simple, whether you suffer from back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, tiredness, headaches…I could go on and on! All of these things result from a problem that is going on in our body, it doesn’t take rocket science to figure that one out. So why then does it make any sense to leave the source of the problem and only focus on the symptom?

Take this way of thinking home with you for any health problem you have. Make smart decisions for your own health, and always find a HEALTH care provider who will help you find and treat problems, instead of a SICK care provider who will help you treat the sickness that is resulting from the problem.

  • Sleep, why do you elude me so?

Sleep, a topic near and dear to my heart is the topic I have chosen today.

Many of us find ourselves never getting quite enough of the sweet deep refreshing sleep we seemed to get as children. We search for it everywhere from holistic approaches to prescription drugs. As Americans and professionals we are especially prone to finding ourselves in debt to many creditors, the first of which turns out to be our bodies for all the sleep we keep cheating it out of each week.

I know because as I write this it is past a good normal bed time which I should be keeping but as much as I try 12:20/1 am sees me all too often. We are on way too friendly terms since college and as much as I have tried I have not found a way to get my 8 hours in consistently since before high school.

My search for a better nights sleep has taken me many places and taught me many things. Many of which are in the following article which shows the research in a much more clear and concise way that I can thus I have included it. However I can say from experience many of the techniques and advice found in the article I know to be good and true.

I must add however that the best thing you can do to help your body repay its sleep debt is relax sooner after getting home and not try to fight sleep so hard but let it take you as it will.

Cover your charging lights for all the technology that clutters your room, keep a bottle of water by your bed, get comfy and go for it. Set a sleep schedule like a work schedule and stick to it and you will find some good sleep in your future.

Calm your body and your mind will follow, whither its foam rolling, massage or an adjustment, calm the body and you will be able to sleep much easier. Throw in a better diet not too close to bed times and add a good hard workout to your day and you won’t be able to stop sleep from taking you with it.

I hope you all learn from this article as much as I did.

  • FLU Shot? Think Twice…

Spray Pesticide on an Apple and it’s no longer Organic. Add a drop of oil to a glass of Spring Water and it’s no longer pure. Most Americans detest the idea of dumping chemicals in a pristine, natural environment. But why not the same aversion when it comes to getting the flu shot?

Maybe it’s because you don’t realize what’s in it: MERCURY ( a known neurotoxin in the form of Thime-risol), GLYCOL ( a component in antifreeze) and FORMALDEHYDE (the stuff they preserve cadavers with). If you dumped those chemicals in your local water supply you’d get arrested. But every year, unknowing Americans line up at their local pharmacy to get this stuff injected into their veins.

Given the choice to eat an organic apple vs. one blasted with toxic chemicals, you know which one you’d rather take a bite out of. Question is, would you take a bite out of yourself after getting injected with the ingredients in the flu shot? There are natural, alternative ways to boost your immune system and protect yourself from the flu. Ask one of our team members here at HealthSource of Chattanooga about the alternative ways you can keep your body ORGANIC this season!

  • Our Kids

In today’s world we are starting to realize that our health is going down hill. We are smarter and more advanced than any humans that have came before. There have been more inventions in the last 50 years than in all of previous history combined. WOW, we are great. Then why are we less healthy than ever before?

We take care of our brains, but not the vessel that it is carried in. As a society we have become more sedate and much less active. Watching TV to catch up on the days events and reality shows outweigh our desire to get off the couch and exercise. With laziness comes laziness. So, is shortening our lives and decreasing the quality of our lives the worst thing we are doing? NO!

We are showing our children that health is unimportant. When they see us laying around watching tv, snacking on potato chips and endlessly growing. We are showing that it is okay to be lazy and sick. That IS the worst thing we are doing. We are raising the first generation in modern history, where our children will not live longer than their parents.

It is our responsibility to teach our children to be smarter and wiser than we are. Do we remember what it was like to be outside until dark playing? When we were mad that our parents made us come in for diner? Do we remember playing tag or hide and seek with our friends? Do we even remember walking to the mail box without breathing heavy?

Why are we letting our children miss those memories? Don’t we want to see our children run, play and laugh? It is such a joy to watch our children play, and we are letting that happen. Playing video games and having muscular thumbs really doesn’t make a healthy child.

This is not a blog to accuse anyone of not taking care of their children, it is just asking that we wake up to what is happening. Spending an hour a day playing with our children could ” NO WILL” make all of our lives better and more enjoyable! Thank you for reading.

  • Back to the Basics

When a new patient starts treatment with us at Healthsource we always give them the world class experience that we give to all of our patients. Our goal is to get our patients out of pain and reach an overall good bill of health. While chiropractic adjustments and manual therapy are greatly important for a healthy mind, body, and spirit; therapeutic exercises are just as important. Exercise is very beneficial in assisting with getting out of pain and strengthening our bodies to make them stronger. A high percentage of our patients have tightness and pain in their neck and shoulders. Most of these issues are caused by work with being at a desk for hours, having bad posture, and from daily life activities. Everyday I assist our patients with their posture, shoulder positioning, and stretches to help get them out of pain as well as strengthen these areas so these painful issues subside. The basic exercises I begin all patients with are the Brueggar position, neck drawers, trap stretch, levator scapulae stretch. Combination of all these exercises together increase range of motion, increase flexibility, relieves muscle tension, and helps strengthen the neck and shoulders. Doing these basic exercises at least once a day everyday will help increase the healing process and the sooner you will be out of pain. When you come into the office we want you to always do your exercises, and I will progress you more as the healing process gets better. When you are not in the office it is very important that you still do some of the basic exercises I teach you at home so you continue to better yourself as a whole so you can reach that place of no pain. I have included a video of some of the basic exercises and stretches for neck and shoulders. Enjoy the video and get your “Exercise On!”

  • Nerve vs Muscle

If you have back stiffness, neck discomfort or maybe leg discomfort, the issue could be originating from nerve irritation . People regularly mistakenly blame the muscles for discomfort or numbness in a limb when in fact the issues results from a nerve. Unless the nerve is treated by someone, like a chiropractor, the symptoms will persist as treating only the muscle is treating a spinoff of the nerve irritation in relation to a misalignment or injury of the spine. The main signs of nerve irritation are discomfort, insensibility, tingling and numbness.

The trapped nerve is the most common sort of nerve irritation and happens when a nerve exits the spine it can become pinched between 2 bones or maybe compressed by a bulging or otherwise unhealthy disk. Stenosis can also cause pinched nerves which is a bony overgrowth that shrinks the exit canal for spinal nerves. A chiropractor can use the location of the pain to find the source of the pinching. Pinching in the neck can cause tingling or agony in the shoulders, arms and hands and pinching in the back, like sciatica, can cause pain or tingling in the legs and feet. Certain types of adjustments will be used dependent on the cause of the trapped nerve.

The trapped nerve is a nerve that has become stuck to surrounding soft tissue such as muscles or ligaments and is mostly the result of repeated motion. So how can this happen? When a repeated motion happens, the rubbing of the nerve against the more delicate tissue can lay down scar tissue and cause the nerve to stick to the tissue. Persistent muscle contraction can also have a similar effect. Both situations deprive the delicate tissue of oxygen and cause the scar tissue to form and the sticking process to worsen.

One thing to notice is that occasionally these wounds can be forming for years before symptoms become agonizing enough to cause concern. This is similar to a cavity decaying over time.

Because these kinds of nerve irritation can be painful and cause lasting damage it is very important to consult a chiropractor as quickly as symptoms happen and not just presume that the issue originates with the muscle. Nerve irritation can adversely affect your life and relief does exist.
